After a number of years of running The Works nightclub on Broad street, Gatecrasher takes the plunge and spends £5 million on developing the old and battered Works club into a jaw dropping industry wowing master piece, worthy of the Gatecrasher name.

The new club is an extraordinary concept incorporating the essential elements that guarantee a spectacular night of extravagant, dramatic, exhilarating entertainment. An auditorium designed to astound, mesmerise, enchant and thrill!

The club hasn’t held back on the technology used to get the effect they wanted. Apart from the array of lighting effects and thunderous speakers, the main room has had an installation of the UK’s largest LED video display.

The structure is of a 3 Dimensional design, three vertical columns running from floor to ceiling with two horizontal sections spanning the uprights. The structure has been painstakingly covered head to toe in LEDs by Lighting Effects Distribution company, www.led-lites.co.uk.

Gatecrasher enlisted the expertise of designers Big Time Design, headed up by a legendary nightclub designer Callin Fortis, to create the ultimate Miami style club experience, devised in Ibiza, designed in New York and built in Birmingham.

Callin Fortis is responsible for the award winning designs, best interior design, best renovation - of the world’s most famous clubs including Crobar New York, Crobar Chicago, Crobar Buenos Aires and The 2008 Club World Awards winner The Cameo Miami.

The Definitive Project
Gatecrasher asked the Definitive Media team to create the visual content for this unusual shaped installation. Definitive Media produced over 250 bespoke video LED loops, specially designed to work with the 3D effect of the display.

With the 3D construction of the LED display, the team had to design the visuals with pixel perfect mapping which allowed the visuals to wrap around the structure seamlessly. Each video sequence was split into layers and assigned to each face of the wall which gave the ability of full control over the 3D display. The visuals consisted of designs that could be layered or used independently dependant on need.

The beauty of LED displays is that it can be used as a lighting effect as well as a video display. Mixing the two effect together creates a stunning effect.

A good example is when the wall is used for a mood setting lighting effect, Layer 1 visuals can be used to add smooth colour changes etc to all sides of the structure. Then when the LEDs need to be used for a big impact to accompany a floor filling track, Layer 2 loops can be triggered that only appear on the front facing side, creating a mind blowing effect for the people on the dance floor, while the side faces are left unchanged. This is important as the side faces are viewable from the relaxing areas of the club. With the Definitive visuals, the wall can be used in a precise manner.

The bespoke LED visuals really brought the magic to the display and made it “Sing” as Woody (Technical Manager from Lighting Effects Distribution) commented.

The playback system is Arkaos DMX with LED mapper to match the screen resolution to the LED display.
